CARRIE'S CABIN

Located at the heart of the Goodell Heritage Garden, this cabin was built in 1934 by Todd Goodell. At the time, his eldest daughter, Carrie, was 26 years old. She had asked for a “cabin in the woods,” looking for a place of privacy and respite where should read and study. Hoping to keep his daughter happy but likewise well aware of the logistical and economic challenges present, Todd built this cabin adjacent to the farmhouse, allotted a few acres to Carrie’s gardening interests and told he she could “grow the woods and gardens around” the cabin. The first tree Carrie planted around her new cabin was the Red Oak (Quercus rubra), near the chimney. Carrie also planted many full-sun favorites such as hollyhocks, lily, iris, peony and rose about the cabin. Thus began Carrie’s “Garden of Eden.”
